Reindeer

Meet the reindeer at Whitehouse Farm today – Comet, Cupid, and Blitzen! These gentle and curious animals love meeting visitors and showing off their impressive antlers. Learn all about what makes reindeer so special, discover fun facts about their natural habitats, and enjoy a close-up encounter with these beautiful creatures.

Did you know

  • Reindeers can see in ultraviolet light. This is so they can see white against white predators, such as the Polar Bear. They can also see the yellow of a urine trail of a potential predator.
  • A reindeer’s nose really does help keep it warm — it heats up the cold air before it reaches their lungs!

Fun Fact!

  • The Reindeer (Ragnifer Tarandus) coat is made up of two layers – a dense inner layer and an outer layer which is made of hollow individual hair shafts, which trap air that their body then heats.
  • Their sense of sight and hearing aren’t brilliant, so they rely mainly on their great sense of smell. When they walk they make a clicking sound – this is a tendon in their foot passing over the bone. This enables them to communicate with each other in bad weather conditions.
  • They have an inner, secondary eyelid which they can use to prevent their eyeball from freezing. They have hair in their nostrils and ears which they can close up to prevent their inner organs from freezing.
  • Both males and females have antlers which they shed and regrow annually.
  • In the wild, reindeer can travel up to 3,000 miles a year during migration — that’s one of the longest journeys of any land mammal!
  • Reindeer have special hooves that change with the seasons — soft and spongy in summer for muddy ground, and hard and sharp in winter to grip the ice and snow!
  • Reindeer are great runners and swimmers! They can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour and swim across rivers or lakes during migration.

"Fab day out"

The hard work and money that has been put in is incredible. The toilet facilities are amazing. There was loads for them to do and we stayed for about 5 hours.

"The staff couldn’t have impressed us any better than they did!"

From entering we were greeted and seen to quickly, we went to the cafe for a quick bite to eat and the staff again friendly, attentive and couldn’t have done anymore to help!

"An excellent family day out! Lovely staff and loads to do!"

I don’t often write reviews but this place deserves the effort. There is so much to do and we had a lovely day. The staff were all brilliant, and the place is very clean and well looked after.

"Another brilliant time at this award winning farm park today."

Other farm parks should visit so they know what makes a good attraction. Brilliant place. Loads to do. Really nice staff. Happy animals. Bathrooms clean and well kept grounds.

"Absolutely fantastic experience"

By far the best hands-on farm visit in the UK! The farm wasn’t crowded, which made the visit even more enjoyable. There were plenty of activities for kids including a fun tractor ride that they loved.

"Great family day out"

First visit and definitely not the last. Second visit for rest of family including 3 year old and they love it too! So much to see, do and interact with. Able to pet snakes, rabbits, guinea pigs.

"Truly the best."

This is by far the best we have ever been to and we have been to lots of farm parks around the country. Highly recommend you booking. 5*.

"It has everything you need for a great family day and it never disappoints!!"

We absolutely love Jake who spends his time walking round, he’s so friendly. You can tell the animals are happy and well cared for, the little goats were roaming and playing with each other.

"We always have the best time here."

We went both days this weekend because we had so much fun and my little one wanted to go back and so did we! The park near the car park is amazing.
