Emu
Say hello to our four friendly emus at Whitehouse Farm Centre in Morpeth—Elmo, Esther, Eli, and Edie! These curious giants love making new friends, and if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try feeding them up close? Just watch out—they might be cheekier than you expect! Emus are fascinating creatures known for their impressive speed and unique booming calls.
It is the male who makes the nest and once the eggs are laid, the male sits on them until they hatch.
Fun Fact!
Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) are the second largest bird in the world, after the Ostrich. They have two sets of eyelids, one for blinking and the other for keeping the dust out. Even though they are flightless, Emus still have small wings which they use to steer themselves when running at top speed. They are the only birds with calf muscles, which allow them to jump up to 7 feet in the air.
They can run up to 30 miles per hour (about 50 km/h) — faster than most humans!
Emus are surprisingly good swimmers and can cross rivers with ease.
They make deep booming, drumming, and grunting noises to communicate.
They’re naturally curious and often come close to humans to check things out!
Come and meet our friendly emus in Morpeth at Whitehouse Farm Centre today!
Don’t just take our word for it - hear from the families and visitors who’ve spent a day with us!
"Fab day out"
The hard work and money that has been put in is incredible. The toilet facilities are amazing. There was loads for them to do and we stayed for about 5 hours.
"The staff couldn’t have impressed us any better than they did!"
From entering we were greeted and seen to quickly, we went to the cafe for a quick bite to eat and the staff again friendly, attentive and couldn’t have done anymore to help!
"An excellent family day out! Lovely staff and loads to do!"
I don’t often write reviews but this place deserves the effort. There is so much to do and we had a lovely day. The staff were all brilliant, and the place is very clean and well looked after.
"Another brilliant time at this award winning farm park today."
Other farm parks should visit so they know what makes a good attraction. Brilliant place. Loads to do. Really nice staff. Happy animals. Bathrooms clean and well kept grounds.
"Absolutely fantastic experience"
By far the best hands-on farm visit in the UK! The farm wasn’t crowded, which made the visit even more enjoyable. There were plenty of activities for kids, including a fun tractor ride that they loved
"Great family day out"
First visit and definitely not the last. Second visit for rest of family including 3 year old and they love it too! So much to see, do and interact with. Able to pet snakes, rabbits, guinea pigs. The
"Truly the best."
This is by far the best we have ever been to and we have been to lots of farm parks around the country. Highly recommend you booking. 5*.
"It has everything you need for a great family day and it never disappoints!!"
We absolutely love Jake who spends his time walking round, he’s so friendly. You can tell the animals are happy and well cared for, the little goats were roaming and playing with each other.
"We always have the best time here."
We went both days this weekend because we had so much fun and my little one wanted to go back and so did we! The park near the car park is amazing.
